Public Education

Every year U.S. fire departments respond to nearly two million fires, with three-quarters of them occurring in residences. Fire costs our nation billions of dollars every year in property loss, thousands of lives are lost, and many more disrupted.

Most of these fire are preventable. The Firefighters Support Foundation sets aside a portion of our funds for, and we devote efforts to, fire safety and prevention education.

In addition to the periodic tips on our home page, our latest public education brochure can be downloaded here. Permission is hereby granted to reproduce this brochure for public education and awareness purposes. If you would like more of these brochures, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Getting Involved

Fire Corps is one of five partner programs under Citizen Corps, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) grassroots strategy to bring together government and community leaders to involve citizens in all-hazards emergency preparedness and resilience. Citizen Corps partner programs share the common goal of helping communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies of all kinds. Launched in 2004, Fire Corps is managed by the National Volunteer Fire Council.

Community members can make a difference for their local fire and EMS department. Fire Corps helps departments build more capacity by connecting them to community volunteers who can assist in a variety of non-emergency roles. Explore their site to learn more about Fire Corps, setting up a Fire Corps program, to find existing programs, and to read about how community members and departments nationwide are benefiting from Fire Corps.

Recommended Fire Safety Resources

Disaster Preparedness

The National Volunteer Fire Council has an excellent page of resources on preparing for disasters such as pandemics, hurricanes and terrorism. These kinds of disasters are like fires in the way they can disrupt your life, and preparing for them has much in common with preparing for the event of and the aftermath of a fire.

Firecorps.org also has an excellent page on these subjects, with additional information on preventing fires.
